Add to Rushcart at Waterfoot Wakes

Rushcarts are a distinctly northwest folk custom. Traditionally built from Juncaceae rushes and pulled through the streets during wakes week celebrations and other mill holidays, there are still annual rushcart festivals in Saddleworth, Whitworth and Sowerby Bridge.

This year, the artist Lucy Wright is building a rushcart for Waterfoot, as part of her ongoing ‘Future Folk Archetypes’ series. Combining the dazzling aesthetics of the Lancashire carnivals, past and present—with a contemporary ‘cart’ built around a supermarket trolley—all elements of the cart’s decorations will be made by hand.

Come along and create spangly rosettes and other adornments, and learn how you can help pull (or push!) the cart in the Waterfoot Wakes parade on 12 July!
